Don’t Drag God Into Your Politics
First of all, let me state clearly that God is not a registered Republican, or Democrat. He is not even an Independent, he is apolitical. He is not affiliated with any of our political parties and is not a registered voter. His ways, thoughts, and character are too high to be dragged into the corrupt biases of self-gratifying politicians, insensitive pastors, preachers, and lying prophets. The shame and embarrassment imposed on the kingdom of God during this political season will have a lasting effect.
The Church is already challenged
At a time when the church is challenged for its credibility and authenticity in presenting to the world the efficacy of the atoning redemptive blood of Christ, not only to redeem the lost, but to transform the lives of the wayward, and also to show his love, care, and compassion for everyone without prejudice or partiality. Now, unfortunately (and I say this with great disappointment, frustration, regret, and yes, anger) many of those among us who have the platform to reach a very broad audience to genuinely represent Christ in a time of crisis, despair, confusion, and uncertainty, have used their platform to bring shame on the kingdom and virtually perpetual damage to their own credibility and trustworthiness.
A false depiction of God working
It doesn’t matter who you voted for, and what your preferences are, God should not be brought into the conversation as a prop who puts his stamp of approval on what we desire to be the end result. Just about two or three weeks before the election I was watching a live broadcast on Facebook where America Stands was doing a live stream on Kenneth Copeland Ministries where they were communicating with a number of ministers and so-called prophets were having their input. To the shock of my life and despair in my spirit this so-called (false) prophet (I don’t recall his name) stood up and began to pray, getting louder and emotionally involved as if he were entering into the third heaven. Then with a supposed word from the Lord he began to declare with the most aggressive intensity he began to state, “This is what the Lord is saying” (I couldn’t hear some of the unintelligible things he was saying) “This is what the Lord is saying, this is not the time, this is not the time, this is not the time for a woman…” He went on and on, but those words remain indelible in my mind. I wonder how he defends those prophetic declarations today. Somebody is lying, and I guarantee that it is not the Lord.
Believe not every spirit, try them
Another sad episode was with a popular female minister who counsels the president, and she has become an international laughingstock, and a comedian’s treasure pot for her chanting, ranting, jiving, speaking gibberish in the name of speaking with other tongues, and calling angels from Africa, South America, and all over the world to bring victory and righteousness to the White House. Everyone has a right to vote and to choose who they vote for in the conviction of their own conscience, or the lack thereof. However, the name of God or the working of the Holy Spirit should not be used to fabricate lies or to authenticate one’s emotional desire for a specific result. Here is one reason God should be out of our politics. There are millions of people praying and beseeching God to answer in the affirmative on their personal preference. Both sides are making reasonable arguments, however, in the end, some will be happy and others will be sad no matter what the result is.
You can’t twist God’s arm to fit your agenda
God is not obligated to respond to our political wishes. What everyone should be doing is asking God to let his will be done, and give us the wisdom, understanding, and humility to submit to it. Instead, many have laid their own foundation, set their platform, establish their own little cluster, and expect to box God in their narrative, and the narrowness of their finite minds. Dare any of us to box the Infinite, Omniscient God into the corner of our own selfish and often corrupt agenda. Don’t put God to the test because he cannot lose. Gideon’s approach to God in Joshua 6 was not putting him to a test, rather it was an expression of his humility before God, and he wanted to build his confidence that God was really sending him to fight against the Midianites, hence he would guarantee his victory.
God is still willing to forgive
It is my hope that these people who have publicly defamed the name of the Lord and the Holy Spirit for political reasons will come to some form of recognition and penitence, and repent of their blunder, and openly ask God for forgiveness, and also seek the forgiveness of the nation to begin some form of restoration. I also hope that this will be a teaching moment for those who find it easy to state that they hear from the Lord for personal gain will consider the possible ramification, of the negative impact it will have on the lives of others and the credibility of those who represent Christ need to have. If you haven’t heard from the Lord, be quiet, and refrain from using his name for personal, and political justification.

The very first paragraph of this blog hit the nail squarely and unmistakably on the head! All political candidates, parties, ideologies, human and social systems and movements are inherently flawed; not a single one can, in its entirety, measure up to the righteous standards of God. Christianity has been shamelessly weaponized by both the right and left of American politics, yet Jesus himself did not endorse any one political, social or economic world system at all. He Himself said several times that His Kingdom / Government is not of this sinful world. It is nothing short of idolatry and heresy to equate any political movement to the Kingdom of God.
During this election cycle, the testimony of the Church in America (both locally and nationally) became horribly marred as our blatant, jarring hypocrisy was on display for all to see: we claim to be a people governed by the love of God, yet in the same breath we were vilifying , insulting and ostracizing our own brothers and sisters in Christ over differences in imperfect, human political ideologies. In fact, many Christians chose to put their political affiliation above God and His Word when, instead of loving each other unconditionally as we are commanded to do in the Holy Scriptures, we chose to berate and stop talking to each other because we did not agree on a political matter.
This blog rightfully places emphasis on those in leadership roles in the Church, but for me it was more heart-rending to watch brothers and sisters in Christ from the same community denigrate each other in the interest of political alliance. As Rev. Dr. Michael F. Bird says in his article “Jesus isn’t interested in America’s two-party division”
“For people who are serious about following Jesus and how to live out their faith in him, it is not a question as to whether Jesus believes in our politics; rather, the real question has to be whether we believe in Jesus and in his kingdom as a challenge to our politics.
In other words, for Christians, the point of contention should not be whether Jesus is more conducive to Republican or Democratic parties, but whether we are prepared to break from the polarization of our politics to engage in a more authentic mode of discipleship.”
(The Washington Post; November 13, 2019).
The Bible said they will know we are Christians by our LOVE, not by the political party that we support. Let us think on these things.
